Some say gemstones have healing properties. Others say this is false. Which one should we believe? Finding the answer is not as easy as it may seem, with plenty of research carried out on both sides of the fence. However, we’re here to share with you the facts and help you decide for yourself whether gemstones have healing powers or not.
What Are Gemstones?
A gemstone is a cut and polished piece of stone or mineral which has been made into a piece of jewellery. Amethyst, blue lace agate, greenstone, fluorite and tiger eye are some of the many gemstones we work with and include in our Peapod Pendant Necklaces.
Gemstones are found in many countries throughout the world. Mined from around 1-15 kilometres beneath the ground, gemstones are created by the forces within our earth. Lava, heat and pressure all work together to create gemstones, where they are and the concentration at which they meet being the type of gemstone that is made. The earth’s first layer of rock, igneous rock, is where the most common and consequently lower cost gemstones we use come from.
Do Gemstones Have Healing Powers?
There is no scientifically proven evidence that gemstones and crystals are capable of healing. However, gemstones have been used for centuries and are still used today for healing and relaxing purposes. 6000 years ago, the Egyptians used lapis lazuli, carnelian and turquoise gemstones to keep evil spirits and sickness from harming them. Modern thinking about gemstones comes from the Chinese belief of chi or life energy and the Buddhist and Hindu beliefs of chakras.
Each gemstone has it’s own specific properties and area of the body which it concentrates upon. For example, our Amethyst Peapod is great for awakening higher conscious and helping you make wise decisions. It also helps with meditation and provides a spiritual protection against negative forces. The blue lace agate within our Peapods is said to help bring hope, peace and happiness to those who wear it, while our tiger eye gemstone Peapods help with staying centred and non-judgemental.
Caring for Your Gemstones
Gemstones have different levels of hardness, even though they are all essentially rocks. For this reason, keep your different gemstone varieties separate from one another. Sunlight can also fade and weaken the structure of these semi-precious stones, making storing in a dark jewellery box a great idea. It is also important to keep your gemstones away from chemicals, perfumes and lotions, ensuring you apply these before you put on your jewellery.
