Custom keepsakes use a range of metals for keepsakes including brass with brass findings and chains, copper with copper, or gold filled findings and chains, sterling silver and fine silver pendants with sterling silver findings and chains.

What is fine silver? 2014-09-12T18:58:28+00:00

Fine silver is 99.5% pure silver and is used with all of our fingerprint impressions. Unlike sterling silver, fine silver does not tarnish.

What if I want something that is not on your website? 2014-09-12T18:57:43+00:00

Custom Keepsakes takes pride in creating keepsakes to order. If you have a specific requirement, please contact Lois@customkeepsakes.co.nz

Are all of your keepsakes made by hand? 2014-09-12T18:56:53+00:00

All fingerprint pendants, charms and keepsakes are fully designed, created, and finished by hand. To keep costs to a minimum, machine manufactured stamping blanks are purchased in their rough form, assembled by hand, hand stamped letter by letter, then hand finished. Chains are purchased fully assembled or cut to length, and finished.

Is the darkening on stamped keepsakes permanent? 2014-09-12T18:56:06+00:00

Custom Keepsake uses a combination of sulphur solution to tarnish the letter impressions, then coat with guilders paste. While this is a hard wearing process designed specifically for metals, it is considered a temporary darkening and guilders paste may need to be reapplied at a later date. Guilders paste can be purchased from www.regal.co.nz. Following the care instructions listed on this website should reduce the likelihood and frequency of letters needing to be re darkened.

How are the fingerprint pendants made? 2015-02-17T17:11:58+00:00

Fingerprint pendants are made by taking a direct impression into fine silver clay. The clay is made of a mixture of fine silver particles held together by a moldable non toxic binding substance. The pendant is cut to shape, dried, sanded and then fired. When fired, the binding substance burns away leaving behind only the fine silver (99.9% pure silver). The pendant is then brushed, sanded and polished.

Can you use an existing ink print that I have? 2014-09-12T18:54:01+00:00

While it is possible to turn the ink print into a photopolymer plate, some of the detail is lost during the process. It is recommended that for the best result, a direct impression is taken.

I don’t live in Auckland, can I still get a fingerprint pendant made? 2017-01-12T16:26:59+00:00

For clients living outside of Auckland who cannot attend an appointment, we can send you a high quality inkless print kit similar to those used in forensics. The prints that you take are then computer enhanced, scaled to fit the pendant, and turned into a photopolymer plate. This is used to stamp the silver. As the stamp is flat, your pendant will not have the same rounded contours that a finger impression will have but should have the same fingerprint detail. It must be recognised that the quality of the keepsake is highly dependant upon the quality of the print that you take in your own home. In most instances the prints can be cleaned and used, however should the prints not be of a high enough definition, you will be contacted and refunded the purchase price minus kit and freight.

How old should children be before their prints are taken? 2014-09-12T18:50:52+00:00

While fingerprints are present while still in Utero, they become more defined with age. While it may be tempting to get fingerprints done when our babies are still babies, they are best taken from 18mths and upwards. Don’t be in too much of a hurry. Until the age of about 5 or 6 years you are still able to fit a pinky print onto a 10mm charm bracelet sized charm!!!!

Can you put a fingerprint on both sides? 2014-09-12T18:48:53+00:00

No, because the fingerprint is created by a direct impression into mouldable silver clay, it is not possible to turn it over and put a second print without flattening the first impression. If you have two children, we recommend that you either have a larger pendant which fits two prints side by side, or have two pendants stacked on one chain.

How pure is the silver used in the fingerprint pendants? 2014-09-12T18:48:25+00:00

Custom keepsakes use Fine Silver precious metal clay. Fine silver is defined as 99.9% pure silver as compared to sterling silver which is 92.5% pure. All silver chains supplied by Custom Keepsakes with its silver pendant are sterling silver.

Why has the chain provided with my fingerprint tarnished, but the fingerprint pendant hasn’t? 2014-09-12T18:47:45+00:00

The chains provided by Custom Keepsakes are Sterling Silver. Sterling silver is a mixture of 92.5% pure silver, and 7.5% other metals. It is the other metals within the sterling silver which causes the oxidation. The fingerprint pendant is made from Fine Silver which is 99.9% pure silver and therefore has negligible other metals prone to tarnishing.

What is the turnaround for a fingerprint pendant? 2014-09-12T18:36:37+00:00

It is recommended that you allow 10 days between the impression being taken and the keepsake being put on the courier. This allows the piece to fully dry before firing and finishing. Failure to allow the piece to fully dry can result in the fingerprint pendant exploding when being fired.

How do I get a fingerprint to you? 2014-09-12T18:35:57+00:00

What if I am not happy with my product or service? 2014-09-12T18:34:12+00:00

At Custom Keepsakes we aim to please through promising the deliverable and delivering on the promised. Custom keepsakes are hand crafted and finished items and therefore do not exhibit the exacting alignment, uniformity, or finish of machine made mass produced items. Unlike spelling errors, some non uniformity in letter spacing and alignment should be expected (within reason) with any item where letters are individually hand stamped. Irregularities should be viewed as part of the keepsakes uniqueness and hand crafted charm. Should you be unsatisfied with your keepsake, please contact myself to discuss. While Custom Keepsakes agrees to comply with its obligations under the consumer guarantees act in relation to major defects, some minor irregularities simply be considered characteristic of handcrafted items.

What is your delivery turnaround? 2014-09-12T18:27:09+00:00

I normally recommend that you allow a 10 day turnaround from payment to being put on the courier. While in most instances it will be out well before then, this does allow for busy periods and if I am waiting on delivery of any ordered pieces. If I anticipate that it will be any longer, you will be advised. If you need it urgently, let me know and I will try to accommodate you….

Why do you only use “signature required” courier for delivery? 2014-09-12T18:26:18+00:00

The Consumer Guarantees Act now requires all businesses to take responsibility for products until they are received by the purchaser.
